The latest gaming innovations were announced in 2017´s E3, where Microsoft and Sony went toe-to-toe.
Gaming industries battle off after hosting their respective E3 launchings, where innovations, plans and exclusives where announced for gamers around the world.
The event that was open to the public this year caused commotion for users everywhere who were anxious to specifically know how Microsoft was planning to fight back the clear dominance Sony and Playstation have enjoyed these past years… And it did not disappoint.
Microsoft´s press conference came a day earlier than expected as they announced innovation plans on Sunday, a day before the E3 official opening. The company unveiled what they call the world´s most powerful console, the Xbox One X, originally named “Project Scorpio”, which features an exclusive videogame gallery, better graphics and clarity, as well as extended backwards compatibility –which means enabling old games from the very first console.
According to Microsoft´s Annual Report 2016, their annual revenue exceeded 12.1 billion dollars, overcoming the 93.6 billion that was gathered by the end of 2015, nevertheless, Sony is still leading the race in digital game content business, as it´s PS4 gathered over 17.8 billion dollars in sales value, owning 51 percent of the total console market, while Xbox One closed in on 9 million, or, 26 percent share.
As for the multinational company based in Japan (Sony), Shawn Layden, PlayStation Interactive Entertainment President took the microphone, and although their response was not as impressive and big as the one Microsoft left at the E3 conference, it was brief, smart and effective as it announced launchings of attractive titles that caused much anticipation in the PlayStation lovers, such as God of War, Days Gone, the Shadow of Colussus remake, Spider-Man, Monster Hunter: World, Call of Duty: WWII, Crash Bandicoot, Star Child, Uncharted and Destiny 2, among others.
Aside from trailers, news and announcements, the Sony executive also spoke about PlayLink, a new experience of gaming through phone-controlled games, and the PlayStation Experience, where gamers can enjoy the full console experience in a determined spot which this year happens to be in Anaheim, California at the Anaheim Convention Center on December 9th and 10th.
PlayStation virtual reality (PSVR) is also getting a boost, as games such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Final Fantasy, Super Hot VR and Bravo Team are going to lead the way in a new gaming experience that is breaking barriers in the Sony universe.
Within the three industry leaders (Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo), Nintendo was the last to announce its innovations in the E3 event that was watched and much anticipated across the world.
Despite holding only 5 percent of the digital games content in 2016 –in comparison with PlayStation and Xbox–, the Nintendo Switch could re-locate the Japanese corporation on-track. In the last years, the lack of new-full games and paid downloadable content was leaving Nintendo at the back of the bus, but with its E3 press release, hope is still alive in local headquarters.
Games for Nintendo Switch such as Super Mario Odyssey, Rocket League, Metroid Prime 4, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Kirby, Pokemon RPG, Fire Emblem Warriors, Yoshi and the much-anticipated Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansions were the top sayings for Nintendo´s were the new hot thing for the third in line for leaders of the gaming and console industry.
The Nintendo announcement showed an all-in for Nintendo Switch, the new console who is forecasted to sell over 40 million units though 2020, just four years into the devices life-span, a high goal for the dominant company entering the 90´s.
As for the other competitors, Electronic Arts (EA) launched the much-awaited Star Wars: Battlefront II, Need for Speed: Payback and FIFA 18, where Cristiano Ronaldo will appear on the cover hoping to reach new horizons for the already popular sports brand in gaming.
Bethesda announced new story material for Fallout 4, Dishonored 2 DLC, The Elder Scrolls Legends, Quake Champons, Skyrim, Doom VFR, Wolfenstein and the Evil Within series.
Finally, Ubisoft showed new footage for their material, as we got a glimpse of the new Assasins Creed: Origins, The Crew 2, South Park, Skull & Bones, Transference, Just Dance 2018, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Steep, Far Cry and Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle.
The table is set, and gamers are ready. Time will tell who takes the lead and command for the console-gaming market that amounted to 34.7 billion dollars during 2016, and is aiming to rebound up to 36.2 billion for the end of 2017.
